Performance standards




ISO Standards

The International Standards Organization (ISO) has published product standards for GRP-pipes and corresponding test methods. Common to all of the product standards is that they are performance based documents. This means that the required performance and testing of the pipe is specified, rather than structural parameters and manufacturing processes. The product standards apply to pipes with diameter ranges of 100 mm to 4,000 mm and pressure classes up to 32 bar. The flexible joints are required to withstand hydrostatic testing in configurations that simulate exaggerated in-use conditions. These standards include demanding qualification and quality control tests.

EN Standards
The Committee for European Normalization (CEN) has, in parallel with ISO, produced specification standards for GRP-pipes. Similar to the ISO counterparts, these standards are performance based, and demand rigorous testing. In addition to the product standards and accompanying test methods, CEN has also published a document for the assessment of conformity for GRP-pipes.

ASTM
Standards developed by the American Society of Testing and Materials are applied to a variety of fiberglass pipe applications, including conveyance of sanitary sewage, water and industrial waste. There are several ASTM Product Standards in use with reference to test methods for both short-term and long-term properties to assure the performance of the products.

AWWA
AWWA C950 by the American Water Works Association is one of the most comprehensive product standards for fiberglass pipes. This standard for pressure water applications has extensive requirements for pipe and joints, concentrating on quality control and prototype qualification testing. Like the other documents, this is a product performance standard. AWWA has also issued a standards manual, M45, which includes several chapters on the design of GRP pipe for buried and aboveground installations.
